We were unable to respond to the following question in our Q&A on lust. Here is the question and a response.

How should a Christian husband respond whenever his wife responds in a negative way when there is an attractive woman present and he hasn’t ever taken the second look?

A Christian husband should respond in the most loving way by saying, “Yes dear” to whatever his wife says! Seriously, there may be something deeper here with the husband, or the wife, or in the relationship or some combination of all three. It is important for a husband to understand that his wife desires to be the only beauty in his life. It is easy for a wife to feel intimidated or “less pretty” by the presence of a beautiful woman. She may have some self-image issues, but the responsibility of the husband in this matter is to stay focused on his wife, loving her, complimenting her, and cherishing her. If she reacts negatively to your “first look” at a beautiful woman, don’t try to defend yourself. Apologize if she was offended by your “first look” and remain focused on her. At a more appropriate time, try to explain to her that a look does not equal lustful thoughts. Above all, do what you can to communicate your attraction to her.
